The UK government is seeking to put in place ways to improve the rail experience for passengers. One of the issues being looked at is improved connectivity and the Department for Transport (DfT) has set standards for mandatory free WiFi for new rail franchises. Project SAFRON ('Safe Operational Radio Network') is an 18 month project to demonstrate how Passenger WiFi can be used for new innovations in customer information, condition monitoring and even train control, whilst still maintaining the safety and security of the train.
The funded project is being managed by Innovate UK and Apollo Rail Ltd, TeleRail Networks Ltd, Network Rail Telecoms and the University of Surrey were all successful in winning the joint bid to deliver the project.
Congratulations to Apollo Rail!
